Carolina Bonner Leaders

EmPOWERment, Inc. is proud to be partnered with UNC Chapel Hill’s Bonner Leadership Program through the Campus Y. The Bonner Leaders Program at UNC is part of a nationwide network of more than 80 colleges and universities that provide service-based scholarships to support social justice activities throughout students’ college careers. EmPOWERment, Inc. currently has one Bonner Leader working for the organization. 


Karlton Tate

Karlton is a second-year Honors Public Policy student at UNC-Chapel Hill. Karlton is a native of Chapel Hill and graduated from East Chapel Hill High School in 2017. Karlton also volunteers at the Community Empowerment Fund (CEF) as an advocate for community members who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness.

Elliot Chen

Elliot was with EmPOWERment since his freshman year at UNC Chapel Hill. Elliot was an important member here at EmPOWERment, taking on the role as EmPOWERment's website and social media manager and helping us acquire grants to fund Career Explorer and other projects. This past summer (2016) he biked across the country with Bike Build to raise awareness and to support affordable housing.

Alaowei is a UNC Student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biology. He is a passionate advocate for the local community and avid promoter of community building. He helped create and successfully launch the application process for the Emergency Funding Program that allocates funds to families struggling to pay a past due utility bills. He is excited and looking forward to his senior year at EmPOWERment, Inc.

Isabella  is a seasoned traveler and backpacker having explored 10+ countries and contributed over 2,000 volunteer hours worldwide. In her past years with EmPOWERment, Inc. Isabella has kept us a part of the CFC Combined Campaign as well as relaunched our Summer Career Explorers program for disadvantaged youth. We anticipate seeing her further developments and contributions to our organization this coming year!                            

Tarik J Woods

Hi, I am a first year English and Philosophy double major at UNC Chapel Hill. I am from Salisbury, North Carolina, where I went to Salisbury High School. I love working at EmPOWERment because of the opportunity it has provided me to learn about the community outside of university. I am excited for my next three years here at EmPOWERment, Inc.
